In his senior years at school, - Kelvin completed a 2 year "Marine Vocational" course, where he was taught aspects of:- Aqua-culture, Fishing, Surfing, Diving, Sailing, Water Skiing, Small Boat handling, Royal Life Saving, Senior First Aid, along with such 'core' subjects including:-
Marine Navigation, Marine Radio Operation, Marine Events Co-ordination
At the completion of his course, Kelvin obtained formal qualifications in the following subjects toward his Coxswains Certificate:-
Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency SCUBA Diving 'Open Water' certificate Senior First Aid Certificate
Upon leaving school - in November 2004, having obtained his Certificate In Outdoor Recreation (Marine), Kelvin obtained a position, working as a deck hand on a commercial longline fishing boat in Geograph Bay, Busselton - catching octopus for human consumption for the Fremantle Octopus company.
He's become an expert in rope handling and rope splicing, not to mention handling octopus, even the occasional blue ringed variety which are a lot more common catch in Busselton than many a casual holiday maker / swimmer might realise.
